Michael Metcalf Carpets
Michael Metcalf Carpets was established in 1969 and has since operated as a small family business, serving the communities of Morpeth, Bedlington, and the surrounding towns and villages. Michael Metcalf retired in 2014, and the new business owners introduced decades of experience within the carpet departments of both Fenwick and John Lewis and also one of Newcastle upon Tyne's leading interior designers.

We are an independent carpet retailer and a member of the ACG, the largest UK carpet buying group. This enables us to offer honest and transparent advice together with reasonable prices to accompany our first class service. Still a small family business, the aim of our company is to provide the highest quality bespoke service to our customers with integrity and professionalism.

We have direct accounts with virtually every major UK carpet manufacturer, with their wool rich product stands proudly on display in our high street Morpeth showroom. This huge availability is further enhanced with carefully selected mid range, bleach cleanable, and budget carpets from several British flooring suppliers, which means we have one of the largest and varied selections of value for money products anywhere in the North East of England.
Services
Natural flooring carpets as we are familiar with them today began to be introduced to Britain in the late 1980's.
Sadly since then, their peculiarities and the necessity for particular installation techniques has deterred most carpet and flooring retailers from dealing with these wonderful products, leaving only a few scattered specialist suppliers and fitters.
Michael Metcalf Carpets can however promote and recommend them with absolute confidence, because one of our team is an installation specialist who was involved with fitting natural flooring right from the beginning.
Wool is without question the best material for the manufacturing of carpets.
It is natural, sustainable, has superb insulating properties, dyes easily, and keeps its appearance wonderfully.
For many years it has been recognised that the inclusion of a small proportion of nylon into the wool yarn prior to the manufacturing process gives the wool a stronger property.
For this reason it has become standard practice to create the finest carpets with a blend of eighty percent wool and twenty percent nylon, commonly referred to as an 80/20 mix.
At our Morpeth carpet showroom we have a collection of quality tartan and plaid carpets that can completely transform your room or hall stairs and landing.
In addition, we have the knowledge and understanding of carpet pattern repeat and design to match these bold and beautiful carpets from the top landing, through the stairs and half landings, right down to the entrance hallway to the extent that this is mathematically possible.
You can therefore trust us to plan and install your quality tartan or plaid designs to the absolutely highest specifications.
Striped carpets have become extremely fashionable, particularly to hall stairs and landing areas where they can add a striking and prominent addition of colour and design to any residence.
Vibrant, bold and contemporary; they will open the eyes and senses of any visitor to your home.
Many of these linear designs are manufactured with the loop pile rather than the cut pile technology.
Well made loop pile carpets are rugged and tough and will withstand heavy traffic, usually being less prone to pile distortion than their cut pile or tufted cousins.
Without the support of a suitable underlay, a domestic carpet will wear and also deteriorate in appearance quickly.
As well as providing support and cushion for your carpet, underlays supply a feeling of soft underfoot luxury, while also increasing the thermal insulation and soundproofing of your home.
For many years rubber was the primary material used in underlay construction, but new technology has developed with the result that polyurethane foam is now the product of choice.
This is the same foam that we sit on in our chairs and sofas but a much more high density version.
